Classroom News

2nd Quarter News
1st quarter is already over, it always seems to fly by so fast!  I am loving this class this year.  They are very bright and have so much to add to our class discussions.

Math
We will be finishing Unit 2 and will hopefully get through Units 3 and 4 this quarter also.  Unit three is another addition/subtraction unit.  Unit 4 is our geometry unit.

Communication Arts
We will continue learning comprehension strategies.  So far we have talked about metacognition and schema.  We are starting second quarter with inferencing and will also talk about questioning.  Students are encouraged to continue to pick “good fit” books for them that they are interested in and are not too hard or too easy.  So far, I have been happy with their choices this year, they seem to be doing a great job of knowing what books are good for them and always excited to check out new books.

Science
Our next unit will be Matter and Energy.  We will learn about solids, liquids, and gases and discuss how temperature will change matter.  We will also learn how to measure different types of matter using a variety of tools.

Social Studies
Our next unit in Social Studies will be “Understanding Democracy”.  We will discuss the rights and responsibilities that we have as an American citizen.  We will learn about both the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution.  Students will have to know the three branches of government and what their functions are.  This is a big unit in third grade with a lot of new vocabulary.
